Last week we took a look at some of the chemicals and toxins present in many skincare products.  Today we’d like you to meet Kristie from Tilvee Superfood Skincare.  A fellow made in USA (Colorado) women-owned business who is committed to making the healthiest skincare products out there!

An Interview with Tilvee Superfood Skincare

1- Thanks for taking some time to share with us about your company.  Tell us a little bit about what Tilvee Superfood Skincare is and why you started the company.

I started the company after college. I was working in a plant research department at the university after studying chemistry and botany. I also had a side job at a local health food store. I was fascinated with the products sold at the store and their formulations, and after working with customers and breaking down the skin care products I realized that there was a need for products that were yet cleaner than what they had to offer. I studied negative effects of traditional ingredients (even some that were so called natural) and started to realize how much harmful ingredients we were putting on our body (which then gets absorbed through our skin). I had a few customers with allergies to synthetic preservatives and with tough to treat skin care problems. So I used my knowledge of plants and chemistry and started learning to formulate. I also wanted to offer products that were not only clean but effective, so I researched the best plant based ingredients that have not only therapeutic effects on the skin but that help us with these vanity issues as well:) (Fine lines, wrinkles, firming, etc). That was the beginning and gained momentum. Really, Tilvee started because I saw a need and my beginning formulations were helpful and well received. It great from there!

2- What was the process like for developing your formulas?

At first I grew many different herbs and extracted them myself for the formulas. I wild harvested some of them as well. I usually work backwards when developing a formula, I ask myself what do I want this product to do, then ask what therapeutic plants are good for that function and which combine nicely. Then I look at texture, viscosity, etc. I have a trial and error testing phase and eventually hone in on the exact formula!

3- Do you have any words of encouragement or support you’d like to share with our readers?

Start with a few products, swap them out for something cleaner and do your research so you really feel empowered about why you want to go clean. Let it grow as you gain knowledge and are confident in each new item you replace.

4- What other tips would you give to families looking to reduce their waste and toxin exposure?

With Pinterest, you can make a lot of your own skincare goodies and its fun. Its a great way to connect with the ingredients, if you have kids it is a great projects and raises awareness for future generations. They also make great gifts to get other people thinking about going more natural. Local farmers markets always have people selling local, clean products as well which is fun to support. The simpler the ingredient list, the better. ALWAYS read your labels.

6- Is there anything else you’d like to share?

People are amazed how much healthier and clearer their skin looks when they go natural. Honestly, that’s one of the thing I hear the most from customers! The results are undeniable PLUS you know you are doing something good for your body and our environment by not supporting the use of toxic ingredients.
